GADGET UPDATE: The Guardian 7-13 kW Air-Cooled Standby Generator . . . Are you a lawyer who can't get any work done because the power's out? Then perhaps you need this--

It's the Guardian 7-13 kW Air-Cooled Standby Generator. Set it up behind your house, cover it with some bushes, and wait for the storm that will knock out power to more homes than in your power company's 100-year history.
As soon as the trees start going down, your emergency generator will kick in, supplying power via natural gas for more than 3,000 hours. It's the gadget everyone is thinking about here in St. Louis, as we approach 48 hours without power.
At less than $2,000, it might turn out to be cheaper than staying in a hotel . . . but let's hope not!

Some of us down in New Orleans had natural gas powered generators after Katrina and thought things were great until they turned the gas off. Of course you were in no better a situation with a gasoline or diesel powered generator because all the gas stations were closed for almost two months! I realize that what happened here was a fluke, but keep those things in mind when making your decision.

Chris: So you're saying nuclear is the way to go? So long as you have power and running water to keep from having a meltdown? Or is solar a good idea? What about overcast days...
