FIVE REASONS FOR LAWYERS TO LEARN SPANISH . . . Is learning Spanish trendy? In July, the Missouri Bar is putting on a seminar called "Spanish for the Legal Professional." The brochure lists "five reasons for attorneys to learn Spanish." Here's the list, quoting from the brochure--

1. There are more than 30 million Spanish-speakers in the United States of America. In 50 years, Spanish will be the spoken language in the homes of half of the American population.

2. The Spanish language is the mother tongue of almost 350 million people, the second language in international importance, the official language in 21 counties, and an official language of the European Union and other international organizations.

3. Spanish is one of the most frequently used business languages, and Latin America is becoming a very important area for business.

4. Speaking and understanding Spanish will improve your employment and business opportunities.

5. Learning Spanish will help those legal professionals who accept Spanish-speaking clients to be more effective, competent and ethical practitioners who can handle client matters in intercultural and cross-linguistic situations.

If learning Spanish is trendy, I guess I'm a little ahead of the curve, having been slightly fanatical over the past year about completing the Spanish-language acquisition that I began in high school. I also have a webpage in Spanish (which needs work, I admit). And to top it all off, I'm writing this very post from Mexico City, where I've been using Spanish all week. More about that later, perhaps, though Facebook "friends" of my daughter Lydia can view her pictures right now.

Meanwhile, you can read more about Spanish for the Legal Profession here.
