It affected thousands of sites because Network Solutions is, for some reason, still a big domain registrar.
But as for you not noticing any weblogs down, that is probably due to a combination of two reasons:
1. There are a lot more weblogs out there than anyone is capable of following, so while certainly some were down, it stands to reason you wouldn't notice.
2. Most people who register domain names for their blogs probably do a little market research before registering. Network Solutions is one of the most expensive domain registrars out there, by a large margin (together with Register.com, I think). And doesn't give much of any extra value beyond having a big name as your registrar. Not surprising that most bloggers will prefer to use someone else.
